It has been a traveling week for us. 500 miles in 2 day at $5.40 a gal for gas. I wish I could report that it was a road trip with lots of fun things to do. However, Tuesday off to Eugene so I could get an injection in my L4/5. It hurts just a bit by the payoff is no back pain for about 5 months. Then our monthly trip to Salem. Mr. M. and I really do have a great time on these medical trips. If a couple doesn't find good conversation and things to a laugh about, well how boring would that be? Knowing that I would be gone this week I started my FFO piece early. I knew it would take time that I didn't have much of. I have had this styrofoam skull for quite a few years. It's large and I really like the shape of the jaw. Soooo, pull out the clay. I really had so much fun transforming this guy.
Styrofoam skull, Das air dry clay, air bushed painted, and pastels.
The photos are not in the order I worked it. Too hard to take photos when your hands are full of clay.
This was so much fun. I tried to find more skulls like this but to no avail.
This is Das Terracotta clay when it's wet.
As it dries it does turn to a lovely terracotta.
This is after the air brush paintings. Then softened with pastels. Oh and a bit to brighten the teeth.
You can't see the true color on his spikes. They are a rich black purple.
Allowing it to dry.
A bit of highlight on the spikes.
I have a bit more to do to finish him and then he will be placed on this staff that will also be decorated.
I don't have extra faces this week due to my traveling. I will show some next week though. In the mean time the featured artist for

Hi Nicole. What a pleasant surprise being featured by you. A good feeling. Thanks! I guess you already know I am not really a fan of skulls. But! If anyone is able to make me like some, it is you. You can really bring the beauty of them out. :) This one will be great when you are done with the staff. :)
Great to hear that will not be back pain for the next 5 months, and the injection didn't hit you. Congrats on your skull, Nicole! Looking forward to watching your extra faces.
Sounds like a busy week. But you definitely had fun making that skull. It came out great. And a great idea too. Happy FRiday and happy weekend Nicole. hugs-Erika
I hope the pain from the injection will subside very soon - 5 months without back pain is sure worth it. Your skull guy is amazing! I like what you did to him (her?) and showing us the process as well. Does air-dry clay keep permanently?
Wow, Nicole! That skull is amazing. Your process reminds me of the artists at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science who would reconstruct faces based on fossil skulls. I hope that your back pain has vanished. Happy Friday to you. Take care!
Firstly Sis, I'm happy you will have a reprieve from pain for 5 months! An injection in the back though, shudder!!! Your mask...WOW your mask! I love him!!! You are so talented!!! ♥♥
You should start shopping for more skulls now as it is the Halloween season and that is when they would be available. As for what you have done here with this skull ... it's brilliant. I hope we get to see the finished product on the decorated staff. You never cease to amaze me, Nicole.
Boa noite minha querida amiga Nicole. Desejo muita saúde. O presente que você me deu de aniversário "meu desenho"está bem guardado. Bom final de semana.

I didn't have time to find a face to use for this week's face off.
Your skull is perfect for Halloween.
...gas at Costco this week is $3.03. That's quite a skull, Nicole. Thanks for hosting the party.
