The word broom comes from the actual plant, or shrub, that was used to make many early sweeping devices. It gradually replaced the Old English word besom, though both terms appear to have been used until at least the 18th century. From the beginning, brooms and besoms were associated primarily with women, and this ubiquitous household object became a powerful symbol of female domesticity.
Despite this, the first witch to confess to riding a broom or besom was a man: Guillaume Edelin. Edelin was a priest from Saint-Germain-en-Laye, near Paris. He was arrested in 1453 and tried for witchcraft after publicly criticizing the church’s warnings about witches. His confession came under torture, and he eventually repented, but was still imprisoned for life. ( I had something sarcastic to say about that but I will let it go. LOL)
There are many rituals where the broom is used. Women/witches would dance and jump over the broom for fertility. Married couples jump over the broom to seal the union. Pagan belief is that the handle is male and the bristly female. You get the idea. The broom is also used to sweep away evil or negative energy from a room or entire house. The broom doesn't actually touch the ground or floor.
Soak strips of wood twine to wrap around twigs. |
Do this all the way up the broom. |

The broom part can be as thick or thin as you like. |
The one with the burn spots is air fried. |
They turned out perfectly and so good. |

...I think that the prompt is "being watched."
I love your broom, Nicole. I also love that it was made by YOU!! I have a nice broom collection I got years ago at craft shows. I have at least six right here in my office. They are throughout the house. All of mine were made by artisans. I could never make my own. You have created a magical broom, dear.
Glad your poppers turned out good. Too, too hot for me, I fear. That's a really quirky face you drew, dear.
Awesome broomstick Nicole! Scary creature too.
30 year old broom?! Wow
Fun art today, Nicole, but I think the theme this week is 'being watched', broomsticks is up for next week! Your food looks wonderful, as always. Valerie
A Man???!!! Wow. He sure has my respect!
(Would´ve liked to hear your irony, though!)
For fertility - oh, really, I learn so much from all the blogs, thank you!
As a side note... we live near the Harz Mountains where they celebrate the "Hexentanz", the Witches′ Dance each year and you have to teach me about the background!
Crazy!
Love your Broom! Ingo wants too buy me the Witch upon I fell. He is serious.
Ohhhh, jalapeno with cheese!!!
I wanted to sketch today but my hand is still... outch. We have no Broom, hence, Ka-Boom!
With regards to sweeping away negative energy from a place or a house, I have sometimes heard of brooms as a useful tool.
I agree on fried food. I don't eat it.
P.S.: I am going to Naples now once again.
Silly me! I thought a broom was just for sweeping the floor!
Your homemade broom is awesome!
Wow, the history of the broom! Making one sounds like fun, I might look into that! Your creature looks happy and has peaceful eyes.
I love your broom and that you made it yourself. Thanks for all the backstory about brooms too, I like the idea of it being there near the front door for protection. Elle/EOTC xx
Will look out for the correct prompt next week☺happens.
Lots of interesting facts about brooms
Have a nice Thursdsay. Its raining a lot here

Your broom looks wonderful Nicole! Great sketch too, and the peppers look good.

What a fabulous post on the theme of broomsticks, I did enjoy it.
All the best Jan
Dear Nicole this is me all over, not sure weather im on my feet or head this week.. but I will be back next week to take in everything that's lovely all over again.. How fab is that broomstick. Take care Hugs Tracey xx
It's good to have many eyes. You see easily what happens around you! :)
Nicole,
I've gotten off kilter with prompts before, too. That's so super cool that you made your broomstick. It looks fabulous! The jalapeno poppers sound like something we'd like. We prefer to not eat deep fried foods, either. But, sometimes fried is the only way to go for certain things. The oil adds flavor to the food. It's interesting the air fryer burned your test batch. I don't have an air fryer. Can you use oil in it if you want? Of course, that defeats the purpose of air frying, right? :) Thanks for stopping by yesterday to check out my illustration. Have a good weekend, dearie!
Very interesting history on the broom. I love that you made your own and put your own energy into it to sweep out the negative. And the poppers- yum! Sometimes you just have to splurge a bit with the fat/calories:) Happy PPF!
An amazing broom! What an interesting creature! Happy PPF!
Wonderful brookstick creation ~ food sounds yummy too ~ Xo

A fabulous broom and art this week. Thank you for the history lesson as well. Have a great weekend.
I enjoyed this so much, Nicole! Thanks for all the information that you provided. Your jalapeño poppers look scrumptious. I have never had them, because I'm afraid if I had one I wouldn't be able to stop eating them. That's ridiculous, isn't it ~ LOL! You make broom construction look easy, but I'm sure its not as easy as it looks! Have a happy and safe week!
Nicole... I'm positively surprised. Your Post is interesting and wonderful. By the way our word for broom is "Besen"! You see there are roots in our languages. There are a common ground.
Have a good Weekend, stay healthy and well, dear Blogfriend.
Hugs, Heidrun
Bom dia Nicole. Parabéns pelo seu excelente trabalho. A vassoura ficou especial
Eye see what you have done with the face. Great broom and the food looks tasty too.
So I enjoyed your home made broom lesson and you can watch us next week. A little confusion is always a wonderful thing :)

We have an annual art/craft here where there's always a booth selling handmade brooms. Yours is a great one!
giggling. sounds like me. :)
Love your broomstick. Pretty much one my grandmother could have used :)
Love your broom - my grandmother had one when I was a child (maybe she made it I don't know) I was not allowed to use it, it had red ribbon around the handle. I enjoyed your post.
I LOVE your broom Nicole! And I love the lore you wrote about and the traditions. This is one thing I'm missing from my home, a homemade broomstick. I love how you showed us how to make one. There is a lot of negativity to sweep away at times and I think a homemade broom would add more positive energy to my home! Beautiful spooky drawing too! And oh my, the poppers! They look so delicious!!!!
