So far May has been quite busy for me. Doctors for me and Mr. M. of course. All is well with that. Thank goodness. I've been creating art and cleaning house. The days here have been overcast but nice. I guess I can't complain. :)
As you know I've been taken in by drawing birds. This is one I finished.
I also got this one done.
I have several other pieces sketched out and hope to at least one of them done in the next week or so.

I want to thank everyone for all of the well wishes, prayers and healing energy. It has been a tough 7 weeks with lupus/sjogren's but I am pretty much back to what is my normal. A week in bed resting my body and mind helped a lot. Going out into my backyard with no wind and hot sunshine helped too. Although the sun is not good for me, I was covered with a big hat and sunscreen. Just being out in the warm was good medicine. Mr. M. waited on me hand and foot and wouldn't let me do anything except art in bed. LOL
The faces I did get done are these.
This first one has more body to it; I just didn't like it, so I cropped the photo.
The second one is one of my fake birds.
I'm just having fun with these.
Not much from NightCafe but I do have these pretties I made awhile back.

Changed the models and got this. Seriously I did not plan this one.

Here are the features for this week. To remind you, I do use a number generator and I'm keeping track so everyone gets featured.

art, street art, a story about art. Do you have a question or need help

with it. My only rule is that if someone asks for critique it must be done with generosity and consideration.
This is a place of learning, encouragement and inspiration.
Lately, I feel like I'm having trouble drawing eyes. I will sketch a face in and realize the eyes are way off on the side of the head. Here is an example. I got so frustrated with this that I just crumpled it up and threw it away. I retrieved it from the garbage. That's why it's all wrinkled.
I had erased the one eye so many times that the paper was shredding. You can see how far apart the eyes are.
It was the same with this piece. That I salvaged it by adding an eye patch.
Most of the time when I sketch out a face, I just do it. I rarely put in guide lines.
However, my Nan told me to do the 1/3 method. That the outside of the nose should line up with the tear ducts of the eyes, and ends of the mouth should line up with the middle of the eyes. Easy right?
In fact I don't even think about it I just eyeball it and put in the features.
However, for some reason I see the eyes too far apart. I have had to start measuring eye placement.
Not of the whole face just the eyes. There should be one eye length between the eyes. I'm not putting in all of these line to draw a face. My dyslexia would go nuts.
I think I have shared guidelines for a face in an older post, but it doesn't hurt to review the lesson again. Maybe this will help some one with portraits.
There are so many ways to measure features and some of them are pretty extensive. I'm just not into that. I need and want easy.
Lately, I get everything sketched in then I actually take a ruler and put light marks on where the eyes go.
Here are more examples of proportions of the face. This one just doesn't make sense to me but it may to someone else.
Also, I'm not putting in numbers either.
Drawing for me has to be fun and instinctual. I don't want to follow some mathematical equation to draw a face.
Give me the general measurements and let me go for it.
My question to all of you is, how do you start your portraits?

face.
In addition the challenge is optional, I still want to see all of your faces though.

I have decided to have another challenge. You will have plenty of time to get this one finished.
The challenge is to create a portrait of anyone you want. It can be your family, friends, actors, faces you find on the internet, or a perfect stranger that will allow you a photo to work from and to show with your portrait. You can work in any medium, except photography and you have until Friday January 30, 2026. Make it fun and let's see what you come up with.
Before I get started with my art this week I want to share with you what Mr. M. ordered for me. It's a Global pencil case.
I'm very impressed with this product. The zipper is heavy duty and the entire case is very well made.
This week I have a colored pencil piece that I created. I am enjoying the pencils very much and finding all that can be crated with them.

and here is my version of him. I think I got his likeness pretty well.
I love the intensity of his eyes and his broken nose. There are so many different techniques with the pencils. The guy above is light touches and some hatches.
I showed this next photo in any earlier post. It is created with many layers going in different directions. The darker the color the more layers and a bit more pressure.
I really am having fun with these.
No AI today. I want to get right into all of the amazing portraits that were posted last week for the Self Portrait Challenge.
I put too many boxes in, and since it is one single grid I can't change it.
I just want to say that each and every one of you talented artists outdid yourselves with the Self Portraits. I'm honored to know all of you, even if it is in blogland. All of you inspire me to create better.
I hope you had fun with this and that you will join in the next Challenge.
