Friday Face OFF 9/5/25

Welcome To Friday Face OFF (FFO)
This is the place to show off your face art.

Well this has been another very busy week. I was drawing a picture when I realized I had drawn this girl before. I have a folder of face that I like and sometimes pick one to draw. I thought, "OK just go with it." I was just about finished when I grabbed, (what I though was a dark graphite) and went in to shade the lips more. OMG! It was an ink pen. I don't do well with ink.
Again I thought, "just go with it." Well I  still don't like it and it was going to go into the toss file. But then, we all have art pieces that we think are not good. As artists, I think we should show our bad pieces as well as our good.
So, here it goes.
She started like this.
Then here

And here is where I messed up and didn't finish her.
She doesn't look too bad on line but in real time I just don't like the lines. Maybe I will finish her and see what happens.
When I was going through photos I found some that brings back such great memories for me.
This is me and my mom in the mid 90's. We had an herb shop and did shows all across the country.
This is me and my little sister. She passed in 2009.

And this is us just before she passed.
I really miss her.
Now for something not so darn sad. LOL
I think I mentioned somewhere that this year is the first year I have ever seen a cricket. It is also the first time I have seen a Pray Mantis. I have lived here almost 20 year.

This is on our door jam at the back of the house. I had to lighten this up. His face was so darn cute.
What surprised me was I had just read a blog post on "It's a small town" and she showed a Manits. I guess the gods knew I wanted to see one in real life. LOL

Now for some features.
Iris. Always has the best stories to tell.

Gene. He is so talented in many venues. Here is one of his AI pieces.

Granny Annie. A special style of art that I just love.
Well that's it for me.
Now it's time to show me you face

God bless you and your sister

I guess we are our worst and most severe critic. I'm pretty sure that you could probably turn this piece into a direction that you like. I have never worked with ink.
I love the photos of you and your mom and sister. How sad that you lost your little sister and completely understand that you miss her. Funny about the mantis - I did see your comment on Michelle's blog and immediately had to think of that when I saw your photo of the mantis.
Have a lovely weekend, NIcole.

I think the lips look good, but I am seeing it online. I think I do better with pen than pencil.

OKay, I am curious about the "Dorothy Ann" on the picture.
I understand too well about losing a sister. My sister died too early, she was in her twenties. I still miss her so much.

I agree with Carola. We are our own worst critics. I think she is beautiful.

Lovely photos of you, your mom, and sister. Too bad you lost her. At least you looked happy.

A few years ago, I bought a box of 50 praying mantises. They are hard workers in the garden getting rid of unwanted bugs, aphids, etc. Lucky you to find one.

I like your art very much!!! And I agree. Also show when you fail, (you did not) - it encourages others!
Cute pictures. So sad about your Sister.... Eeek about your insect-visitors. Here they are much smaller but soon Australia it will be again and there.... ahhhhhhhhh...
OMG. The70´s are back! LOL, thank you.

The lips look fine to me. I’d be happy to do a kiss test! I haven’t seen a Praying Mantis in a few years now. I don’t ever remember them being plentiful here, but certainly more common than now. As I try to remember, probably the last one I saw was in Croatia in 2018. I’ll have to really start to look for them.

...it has been years since I've seen a Pray Mantis or a cricket. Hold on to your memories.

I like seeing your work and the progression. I haven’t see a mantis in forever. My face appears frequently in selfies but never in drawings. And so it shall continue to be. 😁

I actually like how the lips stand out. It's like she's wearing some bold lipstick color (not that it has color, but like you took a color photo and changed it to black and white). Funny how we all make things we don't like, but others feel differently. And I guess that true for things we like only vice versa. That's so sad about your sister. In the photo of you and her as adults she looks just like a friend of mine. In fact I had to do a double take. I hope you have a wonderful weekend. hugs-Erika

oh my goodness the drawings are wonderful! Your post about your loving sister got me crying. Loosing loved ones is so hard. Sending you all my love and light your way. I am going to go take a picture of the face I recently worked on and come back and share it.

I think it is important to be self-critical and evaluate our work -- but not necessarily over hard on ourselves, though it's so easy to do. You will see things here I don't see. (I adore her hair!). And showing work we don't always like ourselves or when "things go wrong" reminds anyone that we all have that issue -- and I think it can help make newer artists feel more comfortable about their own work as they learn and grow..

I've never had a sister, but I would think that would be a very deep and lasting loss, no matter how many years. I'm sorry you had to experience that.

It's nice but I think it would improve it with more pen lines.

Using a medium you're not used to can throw you off, but she looks good to me.
Lovely pics of you and your mom and you and your sister. It's wonderful you were close to both of them.

I looked up the range of the praying mantis, and they aren’t supposed to be in your area at all, if I understood the map right. I”m sure I’ve seen them around here too, but the map doesn’t allow it. Strange. I haven’t seen one in a long time.
I always enjoy your faces and the way you talk about your process of drawing.

Great photo of you and your mother in the 1990s. It's also lovely the black and white one of the Campanella sisters.
This year I haven't seen any cricket. There are many grasshoppers, but not cricket.

I haven't seen a mantis in many years but I have the memory of seeing on on my back porch when I was small. Sorry of the loss of your sister.
Your drawings are absolutely beautiful. You have lots of talent!

You drew very pouty bouncing lips there. It really stands out
