Hi everyone and a good Monday Morning. It's not that I forgot to finish our trip to Coos Bay, you can see the beginning here, it's just I haven't been able to get to it. Now I am. First you have to go through North Bend to get to Coos Bay.
Here we go.
We drive over another bridge.
Oregon has the most covered bridges in the US. We used to have 54 I think we lost 2 old covered bridges. However, Lane county, the county I live in, has more covered bridges than any other state west of the Mississippi. This particular bridge is unique because it is a swing span to allow ships through. It's another bridge designed by Conde B. McCullough between 1934-36 and is 2,200 feet long.
Here is how it opens. It unlocks and swings to allow large ships to go through. We actually saw this in person one day. The swinging part is quite slow. But so cool to actually see.
This photo is from google
Once across the river, BTW this is the Umpqua River, you are entering Reedsport, There is a lot of history in this part of Oregon. As in many of now states not the best history. When Europeans arrived here in the 1850s it was home to Siuslaw and Lower Umpqua (also known as Kuitsh) Native American tribes. By 1861 the tribes were moved by the US
Army and relocated in Alsea, which is about 85-100 miles north/east.

Reedsport did thrive in those early days with fishing, logging and then the railroad. All of these things have failed in the last few decades and Reedsport is now just another hard hit coastal town. It, like so many other towns, relies on tourism.
This is main street Hwy 101
If you turn left coming into Reedpsport you will be on Route 38.
This is what they call their, "Old Town". Many events during the summer are held here, including the worlds largest Chain saw carving event. Artist from all over the world come here to show off their art. The top winner receives $2,000.00. I used to be a vendor at this event and made more than 2 grand in sales. The art is amazing and this year was the 25th.
Brittany was the winner.
This guy is from Australia, I don't know his name but he is BKCarving on instagram. Want to see some mind blowing art check this guy out.
Then the wood comes to life
This is Mark Colp from Canada.
Also on Route 38 is the art gallery where I was featured for about 5 years. I will have to find some photos of those days.
Well as you see I got off subject and we aren't anywhere near Coos Bay. LOL
In any event, I hope you enjoyed a bit about Reedsport, Oregon.
Have a great Monday.

...once when I was in Portland to visit nurseries, I drove south to see some covered bridges. As I remember they all were painted white. Locally we had a swing bridge, but it was removed. I like the Midcentury Modern style roof on the Safeway store. Brittany's chainsaw is almost as big as she is!
Interesting to me, as Oregon is one of the few states I haven't been to.
Thanks for the tour.
Nice bridges. I thought covered bridges were the New England type that is really like a house with a solid roof, but I can see that the steel superstructure could also be called a cover.
In the late 1940s Americans built in Italy a concrete covered bridge like those in the photos.
Interesting post.
My dad used to live near Coos Bay in Oregon years ago. He would go to the beach and send me pictures. It was so pretty. Loved your pictures.
I enjoyed your post ...
All the best Jan
wow! awesome craftsmanship and great road trip photos ~ fun ~ hugs,

That swing span bridge is very cool. And I loved your detour into chaisaw carving art! It's simply amazing what skilled artists can do with a chainsaw.
Oh wow! I actually liked the clownfish in the anemone and the flying eagle the best, but they are all good. This is a fun trip! :)
How interesting! The chainsaw art amazes me. I would love to watch it being done.
I've never seen a swing bridge. The drawbridges we have here all lift. That was cool to see. And I liked taking this little trip with you Nicole. Your area has a unique vibe that's so interesting to see. hugs-Erika
Thanks for dropping by my blog, Nicole
Luv luv the wooden sculpturing
Much♡love
The chainsaw art is beautiful. I, especially love the eagle - just gorgeous! We have some artists in our area who do this but I have not taken the time to stop to see them in action. Actually, I don't know if they work onsite where the exhibits are, though. That would be interesting to check out. Maybe this fall while on staycation we can do that. :) Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed it a lot! xo
thank you
What a fascinating detour. I love how you took us on an unexpected journey through Reedsport. That swing bridge is absolutely incredible—I can only imagine how cool it must have been to see it in person. And the chainsaw carving art is mind-blowing! It's amazing what artists can create with a log and a chainsaw. I'll definitely check out that Instagram account. Thanks for the little side trip—I'm looking forward to getting back to Coos Bay whenever you're ready
Boa tarde. Uma excelente tarde de terça-feira, com muita paz e saúde. Postagem maravilhosa, minha querida amiga Nicole. Tenho certeza que foi um passeio maravilhoso. Desencontros acontecem. Seja bem-vinda sempre. Grande abraço carioca.
thanks!
I also think of Coos Bay and North Bend of ONE city, and neither we find particularly interesting. Reedsport has the big advantage of being so close to the Dunes and I guess it really needs the tourists. We used to camp in the Oregon Dunes several times and love the OHV-free parts.
Florence and Reedsport both lay between the same 40 mile stretch of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. Lots of high dollar races on the dunes. Big promoters from all over the world. We used to go watch but not any more. Too much for us. LOL
