BOOK REVIEW CONTEMPORARY JEWELRY IN PERSPECTIVE

Hi Everyone!

 

I will be leaving again for my mom's to take care of a few more things. She is doing much better and made it through this last bout.

 

There has been a lot of "down" time which gave me the opportunity to read a book that completely absorbed me. The book is “Contemporary Jewelry in Perspective” edited by Damian Skinner.

I believe that if you are engaging in a hobby or a craft, especially one that you are making a living at, it is important  to know the history and culture, the theory, and the inventiveness of that craft. This book covers all these angles and much more. Once you have a background you can then construct a foreground for your designs, skills, and techniques. They become clearer and more precise, allowing you to move into a more contemporary alignment. 

“Contemporary Jewelry in Perspective” is broken into three very well written parts.

The first is, Thinking about Contemporary Jewelry with the insight from five different designers.

Part two is the History of Contemporary Jewelry. Early Twentieth Century Art Jewelry. Featuring six artists from six different countries.

The last Part is a culmination of eleven artists that bring an expansive view of ideas. 

To quote, in part from the back of the book,

“It introduces different issues that might challenge established ideas, as well as identifies some present and future opportunities.” 

I love this statement. Don’t we all want to challenge, change, impose, and develop new ideas in our art? I do and this book truly brought forth some excitement to my creative soul.

I highly recommend this 264 page hard cover book to all artists who want to expand thought of creating.
