Hi Everyone!
This is NOT the year to NOT have a garden. OMG! I made a quick drive over to the store yesterday morning to get a few veggies.
I have lettuce, spinach and beets starting to show up in my big garden but that doesn't help me today. No, I did NOT pay that price.
We know who to thank for this.
On a happier note, today is my Son's birthday. He is 57. Last year I wrote that he was 57 but I was a year off. EEKKK!!!
My Son and DIL at the fair
Back to gardening
Just starting to come up.
Spinach
I have several types of lettuce.
and in the back Salvia is starting to bloom I'm very happy because it's been storming, cold and windy.
I did get some romaine at the other store in town. I washed and dried it then put it into quart size mason jars.
I've showed this trick before with my food saver, but that has bit the dust. Last year I got a hand held sealer.
place a new or used canning jar lid on the jar. Then push the sealer on, press the button and watch the air get removed from the jar. When the sealer is done it makes a pufff sound.
Screw on the ring, label and place in the fridg. This lettuce will last about 3 months. I use small canning jars to preserve herbs this way. They last so much longer.
To end this post here is a little guy that comes to visit everyday. He turned his head just as I snapped the shot.
Have a nice Saturday
Nicole

Great to see Salvia is already blooming in your garden, despite the weather hasn't been as sunny as it should be on the West coast.
I approve of your son’s red shirt and the hand-sealer.
Great photos Nicole. Your son looks a lot younger than 57! :-D
Have a nice Saturday, Nicole
Much love
Beautiful photos, dear Nicole! Your son looks great.
I feel your pain. A watermelon was priced at $12.00 at the Amish market today, which is usually cheaper than the grocery stores. *sigh* I think I need one of those jar sealers!
I'm so glad you are growing lettuce and spinach. They are pretty easy and grow and don't require a lot of work. I bet they grow great in your area too. My kale and arugula are just about ready to harvest, but lettuce and spinach not yet. I won't be by for SITAR tomorrow since I'm heading out of town to spend the day with my daughter. If I get time tomorrow night I'll join in late, but I'm not sure if that will happen. Have a super weekend. hugs-Erika
Funny about your son's birthday! Happy Birthday to him!
My effotts to grow gasoline have proven to be unsuccessful
Happy birthday to my son, he is 3 whole years younger than me :)) You have a nice yield from the lettuce onwards. I wish you a nice Sunday... Hugs, Andreja
Happy Birthday to your son, nice photos of him and his wife.
Nearly $5 AUD for a lettuce is a bit steep in price, I think I would maybe not buy it unless it was really necessary. Your garden is coming along nicely.
...Nicole, you will always be a gardener!
Yep, the price of everything is going up. Given that around thirty percent of food in an average home is wasted, perhaps people will finally be more responsible when it comes to eating what they buy. Just as an aside, I recently gave a presentation to a large horticultural organization. It was a full day event and I was invited for lunch, at the end of which I was to do my presentation. I purposely looked around before starting, and every plate, without exception, had food left on it. It was a buffet lunch and it appears that almost everyone took more than they could eat. A good deal of perfectly good food, well prepared and nutritious, found its way to the garbage bins. It couldn’t even be handed off to a food bank. Sad.
That's a cool idea about the lettuce. Everything is so expensive these days. And that's a pretty nifty gadget!
Everything is so expensive now. It's crazy. Happy birthday to your son. He's a year older than me.
Happy birthday to your son dear Nichole!
They are lovely couple
Oh I feel happy that you could plant your favourite plants and vegetables 🥰
They are sprouting up beautifully
A,amazing that you canned lettuce,
Learning air extraction from jar was cool
First, I cannot believe you have a 57 y.o. child, did you have him at age 5? lol Also, LOVE the shots of your gardens and what is growing. Not into monsters or really AI, but we are into seal a meals at Casa Winans. My Honey has an electronic one and uses it every week, between that machine and his air fryer, he is a happy camper. And since he fizes my food, so am I haha. Yes, great idea to seal the lettuce. We buy iceberg and it hardly lasts a week in a ziplock with paper towels. I read somewhere to wrap it in foil but have not tried that one yet. Honey will not seal a meal my lettuce for some reason, booo! Hope you are doing well and I send prayers for your Mr. M and hope he gets better! xoxo
