Hi Everyone!
Do you make lucky new years food?
My daughter got me started on it many years ago. It seems to be a southern thing. Because I never heard of it here in the Pacific Northwest. Anyway it goes like this. Pork, it can be any kind of pork, greens, black eye'd peas and or lentils. I make beans with both in the pot. Cornbread and ambrosia salad.
Pork, ham, bacon, ham hock. Pigs root forward representing progress in life.
oops forgot to take a photo of the ham hock here is one from the internet.
I made fried cabbage for my greens. Although store bough cabbage isn't as good or as green as my cabbage from the garden. 😀 It still works.
Greens can be spinach, cabbage, collards or kale. They bring money, wealth and financial prosperity.
The peas and lentils represent coin and paper money and wealth.
The ambrosia salad
"Ambrosia" means "immortal" or "food/nectar of the gods" in Greek,
referring to the mythical food of the gods that granted immortality. I don't want immortality but it serves as longevity and health.
Now for the corn bread.
Well that was our good luck dinner for the new year. Do you have any food or other traditions you do? Let me know in the comments.
I'm wearing glare free glasses for my eye and I didn't realize some of the photos are blurry. Sorry but I think you get the idea.
Have a great weekend.
Nicole

A wonderful meal! I love beans but my husband doesn’t. Oh well, I may try to hide them. Crumbling parchment is a great idea. No more hunting down the store-bought muffin baking cups.
ReplyDeleteAll of this looks very good. We had split pea and ham soup -- very delicious! But no other special ones.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much! https://sintrabloguecintia.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteI've never followed any "lucky foods" practices except for chocolate. Isn't it lucky for everything?
ReplyDeleteI've recently started to crumble the parchment. It's such a good idea. I've heard of black eyed peas for lucky food- but we eat the vegan version.
ReplyDeleteSounds and looks good.
ReplyDelete...this looks wonderful to me, when is dinner served?
ReplyDeleteSo yummy!
ReplyDeleteSo many yummy things to eat Nicole. This post made me really hungry... Happy weekend. hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteThis meal looks wonderful, Nicole! And your photos are just fine. I wouldn't have noticed a slight blurriness in a couple if you hadn't mentioned it. 😂 I hope you have enjoyed this meal with Mr M very much!
ReplyDeleteLooks good ...
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your weekend.
All the best Jan
so many lucky foods in traditions from all over creation! I hope you are very lucky in 2026, and enjoy many lucky meals. You didn’t mention herring, which is another of the many lucky ones.
ReplyDeleteAll looks wonderful to eat. We don't do New Years Day meals since the sons have left home and married long ago, but it was a 'thing' once. Time changes by the people.
ReplyDeleteHope your eyes are getting better. :)
I have never even heard of lucky food for the New Year, so I am coming to your house next year! It looks delicious!
