Happy Sunday Everyone!
The new year is coming up quickly. My mom always said if your house is clean on new year's day, it will be easy to keep it clean all year round. So, I've been cleaning like a mad woman. Drawers, closets, cupboards and those nook and crannies that I forget about. LOL
The other new year tradition is to have my pantries full of food. It's said if your cupboards, pantry, freezers and fridg are full on new year, you will have food all year long. So I have been canning and freezing. I got fresh cranberries very inexpensively and canned them up the other day. Today I will be pressure canning more turkey and fresh pork.
I got eggs at the Albetsons/Safeway here in my town. They are the most expensive store here, and most don't shop there. However, they still had eggs at a reasonable price. I stocked up. I will be freezing eggs tomorrow. Yes, you can freeze eggs and if done correctly will last a year in the freezer. I will demo that this week.
Also on new year's day we eat foods that will bring prosperity, luck and health.
We will be having pork, greens, lentils, cornbread and cake.
Pork, symbolizes progress and moving forward.
Greens, symbolize wealth and prosperity.
Lentils, symbolizes luck, prosperity and abundance.
Cornbread, because of it's yellow color symbolizes good fortune and luck.
Cakes have a hidden coin or figure baked inside, which symbolizes good fortune for whoever finds it. In addition all of these new year foods bring good health for the year.
Do you have a new year tradition? Share it with my in the comments.
Have a fabulous Sunday!
Nicole

Happy New Year, Nicole! You should have lots of food for the coming year. You've been canning and getting ready for months! I like your meal and the meaning of all the choices. :)
I had been doing a New Year's Eve ceremony for a couple of decades where I did a burning bowl ceremony and picked an angel card and contemplated the past year and the coming year. My "stuff" has been packed away for two New Year's Eves now. :( But I can do my contemplations, for sure. I think I may pick a word for the year. Next year I should have all my stuff unpacked and be settled in my new home. That is something I look forward to. :) Happy New Year!!
...my best to you for the new year and I love your red sneakers!
Your New Year's feast sounds delightful and filled with wonderful symbolism! It's heartwarming to see how each dish is thoughtfully chosen to bring prosperity, luck, and health. Pork, greens, lentils, cornbread, and cake with hidden surprises – what a fantastic way to welcome the new year!
Hi Nicole,
I hope all your good-luck foods do bring you a good year. A while back, I researched traditions about New Year’s and wrote it up here:

I did not know you could freeze eggs! Looking forward to your tutorial.

Happy new year
Happy New Year. All the best for 2025 with good health. David
Happy New Year! We typically have black eyed peas, greens and cornbread on New Year’s Day. Some years we do substitute cabbage for the greens.
Bom dia e uma excelente segunda-feira. Desejo um Feliz 2025, cheio de paz e saúde. Minha querida amiga Nicole.
Like you I do a lot of cleaning right around the new year. It feels good to do it, doesn't it? I'm very curious about freezing eggs. I didn't know you could do that. Have a wonderful Happy start to the new year.
Because I raises chickens and have an over abundance of eggs, I am most eager to learn about freezing eggs. Can't wait.
I like your symbolic NY dinner. We don't really have any New Year traditions, but I think this year we'll either do Shepherd's pie NYEve or day. I tried hard to find more cranberries at the store today. All gone. I'm bereft.
Happy New Year wishes.
All the best Jan
