I do hope your week has been a good one. I am keeping a positive attitude in hopes that things will change around for us. Uhhh I did find $20.00 on the ground today, so that is something. :)
I made this clay face with no idea of what I was making or how it might turn out.
I started with aluminum foil head. I use air dry clay that goes over the foil and then the features are made. Allow this to dry then paint. For the base coat I put a bit of liquid starch in a bowl, added white acrylic paint, with some tan acrylic paint. I wanted it a bit chalky and this worked.
Once this was dry I added black acrylic paint and then wiped it off
The starch on the under coat helped to distribute the black paint better. I have never used the starch in paint before, but it was in my art room cupboard and so I used it. I will definitely use this method again.

ReplyDeleteI found when I added a bit of liquid starch to my handmade paper, it held together better and was smoother when I removed it from the mold. That was true when I made paper from paper, not when I made paper from plants, which is a very different process. Therefore, I can see how the starch helped your skull. Nicely done, Nicole.

I have a question (and a thank you) concerning the bread-recipe: Mine says "dry yeast" - the recipe says "active dry yeast" - is that the same?
Sorry, I´m a total newbie in this... and maybe that Aussie-yeast is rather "lazy"?

ReplyDeleteThere is something really compelling about this face, Nicole, especially when you look at it straight on. His eyes say that he has stories to tell, but he can't get the words out because they are too traumatic. I can't wait to see what you do with him. Have a good week!

Wow, Liquid starch. Very resourceful with a great result. It’s just the right color for spooky, and I’ll be watching as he develops this week.

ReplyDeleteThat skull came out amazing. I haven't heard of using liquid starch either, but you are right, there is just enough black in spots of your skull. ReplyDeleteI'm glad you're feeling better - you found $20 and started making art again, both are good signs! :-) When your character head was unpainted, I had to think of an aviator from earlier times with his aviator goggles ;-DD Now he looks different, like a goblin living somewhere in an underground land...

ReplyDeleteI admire your inner strength and your talent. Had never heard of using starch with the paint so I will take your word for it that it helps. I love the soulful eyes of your stick head ... can't wait to see what you will add to him for next week. Finding $20 on the ground could be an omen ... maybe things are going to look up for you in more ways. If the wishes of many people can do that for you, then it will happen :) Push forward, Nicole and we will all pray that things get better for you ...
