Hi Everyone!
One day last week we had our trip to Salem. I wait in the car while Mr. M. goes in to see the doctor. I always bring art paper and pencils. The art doesn't always come out the way I see it in my head. This is one of them. I see all of the mistakes and overworked areas. However, art is a learning experience, every mistake is a lesson learned. I should stick to alien creatures when I am drawing in the car. :)
We also got our grocery shopping done. A store we have here in Oregon ( I think it's a PNW chain) is called WinCo. The best prices of any store and they even put the comparison prices of other stores. The best thing about Winco is their produce. It sells so fast that it is displayed in the boxes they came in and NOOOO icky water being sprayed on them.
I don't know what store this is. I got the photo from google. But this is how the produce is displayed.
I can eat me some watermelon |
I got 4 lbs of ripe strawberries for $3.95. Oh the the fruit is from Calif not some country I have never heard of before. |
Lets go back to the strawberries. How about Strawberry cake? I made a simple white cake with some changes. The night before I cut up strawberries, placed them in a bowl with about 2 T sugar and some cranapple juice. Cover and refrigerate. The next day, cream 1/2 cup butter and 3/4C sugar. Add 2 eggs, 2t vanilla extract and blend together. Add 1/2 C milk, 1 3/4 t baking powder then gradually add 1 1/2 C of APF. The dough will be very thick. Remove the strawberries and add enough of the juice to make a nice cake batter. Drain the strawberries and then combine them into the batter. Prepare a cake pan then bake at 350°F for about 30 minutes.
It's a dense cake |
Make a butter frosting and add some of the berry juice. The photo doesn't show it but the frosting is very pink. |
Now to get into the T-Party I have to show a drink. These are hard ciders. I love the cans. Not in my budget though.

Be sure to stop by Elizabeth's. Wishing all of you a great day.

I don't like the water spraying on the produce either. When I can I buy my veggies and fruit at the farmers market. Sometimes it can be a bit pricey, sometimes you can get really good deals. 4 pounds of strawberries for 3.95? I can only dream of that - and I'm from CA. I still haven't found any nice peaches. Usually we get them from the Central Valley, but so far they have all been rock hard.
...I find that the watermelon available these days is seedless. Years ago the watermelon with seeds seemed sweeter to me!
The strawberry cake looks delicious. Michigan strawberry season is a few weeks long at most, so we are eating lots of strawberries right now while they are ripe. Michigan berries cost more because the farmers' families pick them, no exploited farmworkers as far as I know. So many issues, so little time!

Lovely portrait drawing. And that portabella dish- yes please!! I agree with the above comment from Tom about the watermelon. Crazy how just everything has gotten so very pricey...
have a good week and happy T day!
I'm going to make some strawberry rhubarb compote later this week and eat some with warm homemade biscuits. I made a strawberry rhubarb crisp last week. My Rare One's rhubarb is growing like a weed -- got to use it up!
You are making me hungry tonight-smiles-same with the produce near me too-very expensive and not very nice at all I need to make the trip to the amish market soon for fresh Happy T
You did this in a car?! Wow. Mine would look like...Yay to summer fruit - esp strawberries.
And the cans, beautiful!
To a great T-Day!
Fresh produce from a farmer's market is THE BEST!
I get all my fruit and veggies at Aldi and they NEVER spray theirs. However, across the street, Dillon's, which is a Kroger store, sprays theirs. I can't believe you got strawberries for $1.00/lb. That is unheard of here. BTW, prefer my strawberries without anything on them. Just plain little strawberries fresh from the box with their little green hats on them.
Bleubeard feels a whole lot better this week and is glad you didn't intentionally offend him (GRIN). He is ready for watermelon, too.
I actually LOVE that face you drew. She is amazing. I loved the look on her face. This is a keeper, Nicole.
At that price, I couldn't afford that hard cider, either. However, I love the images on the cans. Thanks for sharing your art, your cake, your baked mushrooms, and that hard cider for T this Tuesday.
We don't have WinCo around here, but I do like how they put out their produce. And your strawberry cake looks like one I made after going picking. I didn't frost mine; we've been putting whipped cream on it. Yours looks yummy with frosting. Hard cider is yummy, if it's not too sweet. I hope your skies are staying clea and happy T day. Happy first day of summer too. hugs-Erika
I love all the recipes you share and finally got around to the No Knead Beer Bread. It was very good. When I get some strawberries I will try this one. Right now I am waiting for fresh cherries.
That's a great store you went to, good ide to show the produce that way. And all of your food and drinks sound wonderful, I woud love to eat at your place! Happy T day, Valerie
Love all the food! -christine at https://cmlk79.blogspot.com
I keep fresh fruit and veggies around, but I buy them at the chain grocery store. Your portabella mushroom dish looks delicious! Happy T Tuesday!
It's true, when you're doing artwork, nothing is wasted if you learn from it. I always do-even if it's one small thing. Love the recipes and your foodie pics!
I agree those cans are lovely!! I wish my faces came out that well honestly.. Nicole all your food looks yummy..I have been to a WinCo in California.. We liked it too and prices were really great! Its where i was first introduced to Tillamook icecream! Yes, please! Happy happy T day! Hugs! deb
Yes, those cans are just asking to be bought. At 12 $ for a six-pack, that would be 2$ a can. Not bad. I would be willing to pay that if it was nice cider. And strawberries for 1$ a lb is very good too. We pay more (3 eur a kilo) when in season. I agree, the veg displayed like that looks very good.
Thanks for the recipes. Your food looks really yummy.
I think the drawing you did in the car is very good. You have found fault with it, but I really like it.
Happy T-Day,
Lisca
The strawberry cake looks delicious and perfect for the first day of Summer. Happy T Day
Strawberries and summer just go together don't they.
All the best Jan
The strawberry cake looks delicious! I made three strawberry pies this month and I give up. Maybe I should try something like this, especially since it is iced.
I think your face looks wonderful especially if it just came out of your head!
Happy Tea Day,
Kate
I love fresh fruit too and I love it when I can get a special offer. Food that doesn't travel far is always best! Your face oks reat
...I shall continue...I haven't drawn any faces for ages. The cider cans are definitely attractive- but looks as though they are overpriced. Happy T Day, Chrisx
4lb of strawberries for that price is AMAZING, we get 250g (1/2 pound) for £2.50 at the moment and that's local fruit haha we are so being ripped off and this is during strawberry season too! I love the shading under her eyes on your drawing, she looks great. Sorry for my lateness. Happy T Day! Elle/EOTC xx
