Saturday Garden

 Hi Everyone!

YAY! We have had 1 1/2 days of no rain and a bit of sunshine. It is mind boggling how just a  bit of sun my garden grows and produces. As I have mentioned before it has been very slow going in the garden this year. I have taken day by day notes for my garden journal. This does help to see how thing change from year to year. Part of gardening on the coast, (I guess anywhere) are the rats. We have traps around the fence line. Now before someone thinks how cruel this is, rats carry 35 diseases that can be spread to humans. Not to mention the property damage they can cause. A female rat can give birth to up to 12 pups, and is ready to conceive again in 48 hours. Oh, and let's not forget that rats reach sexual maturity at 9 weeks. Which means that the population from 2 rats can grow to 1,200 in one year. So when I wake up to this,
I'm OK with it.

Yes, Mr. M. has a glove on.

The next thing I found in my yard was a spider I had not seen before. It is called the common house spider and gets up to 3" long and has a cat like face. OK...not much freaks me out. Hell, I lived remote for over 3 years and I have seen some strange creatures, but I really don't want this spider in my house. LOL
I did find her outside.
Now let's end this with something nice. :)
As I mentioned, give a plant some sunshine and it will grow.

 Grey Squash coming alive

 More bush squash

 Beans blooming

The dill is taking off. I use some almost everyday.

It looks like I will have beets this year

Finally got cucumbers to start. These will be replanted today

That's it for today. I am going to start some new seeds today. Hopefully we will have a long Indian summer for these to produce. I am also planting some clover and other flowers.
Hope you have a great Saturday.

Nicole

Kill The Rats! I'm good with that. They get a lot bigger than people who've never seen one in person realize. I'm good with spiders, but I want them outside. Your garden's looking great!

Good morning, your garden is looking beautiful, love their colors too-yes kill the rats they are awful, and we have the dreaded chipmunks-very cute but they destroy everything we try to plant here-so our Wisconsin friends have the same issue and told us what they do.
enjoy your lovely weekend

Your garden looks like it's growing in a very promising way. We didn't plant any dill this year and probably should. I love the taste, as you seem to do too.

Your garden is still looking amazing, but those rats. Eeeks. We have mice here more than rats, chipmunks too. But we did have a muskrat that last summer who used to waddle over to the bird feeder to get seeds that dropped to the ground. I think a bobcat I saw got him, because he is not around this year. Happily. I'd take the spider over a rat anyday. Have a great rest of your weekend. Hugs-Erika

I can relate. First at a neighbouring house I saw a warning sign of rats being poisened and weeks later I went into our cellar (we live in a house of 14 parties) I saw the same sign and thought... Hm? Go in there or send Ingo?
I went and no rat jumped at me, but weeee... Sadly they are clever and if not full of deseases even cute, just think of the movie Ratatouille!

Pigeons we call flying rats for the desease thing, too.

The spider creeps me out even more.

And sadly we are harvesting the last strawberries, we had a heat wave yesterday, yipeeeeee.... Have a nice, rat-free Sunday :-)

I am a confirmed naturalist, have spent my entire life with animals, and I don't resent your treatment of the rats. In fact, kudos for not using poison. It would be nice if the carcasses could be left somewhere safe to get back into the food chain,

Rats! I’m with you on that one, they are a scourge to our world aren’t they. Your plants are looking wonderful, I love that you’re planting clover, it grows wild in our back fields and I dry it for tea. It’s suppose to be very good for many ailments but I just like the mild taste. I’m hoping you get your wish for lonnnnng summer and growing season. I’m still cringing think of that spider, I might have to move it I found it my house! This far north our spiders are few and small. With my diminished eye sight you would think I’m good not being able to see them but oh no, my fear of spiders is such that my eyes may fail me but my imagination takes over , I think of all the spiders I might not be seeing! But they are few here, mostly tiny spiders, and then the daddy long legs in the garden. Not huge ones. Thank heavens !

We haven't had a mouse or rat problem in my neighborhood in years. I'm SO glad, too, because they are really filthy little creatures. Bleubeard is slightly offended that you think that spider has a cat like face. Look at his lovely face and tell him that spider looks like him (BIG GRIN). Seriously, I'm with you on the spider.

You are getting a good crop. Your dill is looking healthier than mine. You are cutting yours, though, and I have yet to cut any of mine. So glad you shared your garden plants and how you take such careful daily notes on them. Lovely.

I"m with you on the rats. None too fond of any of those kinds of things, even Stuart Little -- but rats. NO WAY~!
