PAINT PARTY FRIDAY LEATHER SCULPTURE

Hi Everyone!

I did have some time while caring for my mom. She did a lot of sleeping, so this is something I worked on. One of my leather sculpted faces. This is dyed deer hide. The sculpt starts by wetting the leather and set on a blank form. The form is a piece of wood that I carved into an egg shape for heads. The features are set in by manipulating the leather. I use what ever is around to make the nose, eyes mouth. As I work I use a heat gun to dry the leather. I also have a spray bottle to dampen the leather as I work. Once I get exactly what I want. I use the heat gun again to quick dry the leather. This only dries the outside layer of hide. I allow 24 hours for the piece to sit for a full dry. I use all kinds of mediums and methods to paint the face. This piece I used a "Stone" spray paint. I didn't like the way it turned out so I used my finger to blend the oily rock paint. Then I had a white face. Perfect. The rest of the face was done with pastels. I have a bit more detailing to finish but you get the idea.

A big thank you to Eva and Kristin for hosting PPF. Be sure to visit all the other fabulous artist who join in.

This is just really amazing. The leather makes a great texture for skin.

I've never tried this. Thanks for the DIY. I've only done the textile/fabric sculpting. This looks and sounds to be a lot less messy. Yay.

That mask is astounding - the face is a bit eerie - but it captures you immediately. Hope your mom is feeling better.
