STONES! STONES???

Hi Everyone!

Yesterday I had another ultrasound. It was hilarious!!! The tech is a young girl that has a great personality. I get on the table and ready to go. I was happy that the gel was warm as the test began. We had already discussed that I had a huge stone that was seen in the ER. The tech turned the screen so I could see my "innards" LOL
The tech says, "ohh there is another big one" and "oops another." "OMGosh look at these" She looked down at me and said, "Yep this gallbladder is coming out!" We both started cracking up. I have one gimonsterous stone, 4 or 5  huge stones and we lost count on the medium to small stones. hhhmmmmm no wonder I feel like a truck hit me. LOL I see the surgeon this morning to find out when we can get this done. My daughter was laughing with me as she told me I had a "bag o stones" in my belly. I told her to just call me "ROCKY"

So this last weekend I felt good enough to bead a bit while I rested in bed. I made some bezeled Rivoils. Since they only take 5 minutes each to make this was a good project.
Now these are stones!!!

Have a very nice day today and thank you for all your well wishes, and for sharing your medical issues with me as well. Being here for one another is an important key to keeping us strong.

THE ROAR OF THE DAY

Hi Everyone!

Hope all of you had a nice weekend and that Monday started your week off well. I am still here hanging in. This morning I am off to the hospital for another ultrasound. This one will focus on my kidneys. Of course there is no food or water and I NEED COFFEE!!!! LOL Yes that does make me roar and it is not a good sound. Hee hee hee.

I wanted to share with you a picture that my son-in-law made for me. Dax is my sweetheart. The best person my daughter could have married. Now I could go on and on about how wonderful he is but then that just gets boring to all of you. Right? LOL
I will say that he is a Gunnery Srgt in the US Marines and in his spare time he made this for me.
I love you Dax.

OK I am off to the hospital.
Have a great day everyone.

DO YOU KNOW PEGGY KEMP

Hi Everyone!

Short  update. I saw the surgeon yesterday. Guess what more testing next week then I will hopefully know if I will have surgery. He is concerned about my kidney. This does not surprise me. One of the main organs lupus attacks. I am spending a quiet weekend at home. Hmmmm that is all I do lately. LOL I am in great spirits and my sense of humor is peek. I love and sssoooo appreciate all of your comments and emails. Some of you have me laughing so hard it hurts. LOL

So Do you know Peggy Kemp? If not allow me to introduce her to you.

BW: Let's cut right to the chase. Do you have a mission statement? What motivates you to make art?

PiP: My mission is to help make the world a better place, every day, in whatever I way I can. I try to live aloha and be of loving service. In addition, I want to have FUN and encourage others to enjoy and have faith in their innate creativity and spiritual connection. I'm inspired by nature and color and shape. I'm motivated by how miserable I feel when I don't make art every day. My "beadsugar" gets low and I get crabby.

BW: Where do you currently live and for how long?
PiP: I live on the Garden Island of Kauai, in Hawaii. I live in a tiny apartment in the bottom of a large house, in a residential neighborhood mauka (toward the mountains) from Kapaa. I have lived on Kauai for almost 14 years and I still feel lucky to be here every day. I never take this beauty for granted.

BW: Do you do other work besides being an artist?
PIP: I still very much have a "day job." I am the CEO, chief cook and bottle washer, main worker, and "Princess in Charge" at Peggy in Paradise, the business I run out of my home studio. Peggy in Paradise is a full-serve business that covers everything I know how to do: bookkeeping, remote office management, search engine optimization, social media marketing and management, business consulting, personal organization, gardening, healing. And beading and doll-making! In my spare time, I run a little doll hospital and make doll clothes for fun.

BW: How long have you been making dolls? When did you start beading?
PIP: I have made dolls all my life. My mom taught me to embroider when I was five, and my sister and I dressed our dolls in clothes of our own design. I did cross-stitch and needlepoint for many years. I didn't start bead embroidering until I was around 40, so 20 years ago, and that was about the same time I began to focus on making healing dolls.

BW: What are healing dolls?
PIP: Healing dolls, and other intentional dolls, are made with a prayer in every stitch, while holding an intention of healing.

BW: Who would you say has influenced your art the most?
PIP: Well, Michangelo! And Rubens, Henri Rousseau, Frida Kahlo, and the mille fleur style of the Unicorn Tapestries. But in the modern day, it is without question, Robin Atkins. I met her online 7 years ago when I was searching for flower beads and ordered her book "Spirit Dolls." It is so aligned with who I am and what I do, I felt a kinship with her right away. I use her simple body pattern often. I also very much admire the three-dimensional woven beadwork of Diane Fitzgerald and the netted work of Sandra Halpenny. I love Dottie Hoeschen's faces. I am often inspired by the many beautiful blogs I read.

BW: Is there something you'd still like to learn?
PIP: Hundreds of things! I want to make my own faces. I have all the supplies, including a dedicated oven, but I haven't gotten around to playing with the clay yet. I want to draw better. I'm learning to work with encaustics, which is really fun. I want to make marionettes.

BW: What medium do you use when you're making dolls? Any favorite beads?
PIP: I use a variety of different backings, depending on the doll: felt, fabric backed with archival paper, or your own Nicole's BeadBacking, which I love. Since I discovered it (and this is not a paid plug) I have used it almost exclusively. It starts out rather stiff and holds it "hand" during stitching, but it does soften up as you use it. It does not ravel and it comes in really good bright colors, plus some neutrals. It's easy to use and doesn't stretch. I'm in love with natural freshwater pearls and anything 24K at the moment. My favorite colors are blue, fuchsia, hot pink, lime green, and coral.

BW: Do you make other things besides dolls?
PIP: I make beaded patches, stars, prayer nets, pocket tiaras, bookmarks, tassels, and custom doll clothes. I don't like to make the same thing over  and over.

BW: Pocket tiaras? What are they?
PIP: I had a dear friend who was diagnosed with a brain lesion and about to undergo a bunch of tests. I wanted to make her a tiara to remind her that she is a Princess of God, but she was having compression headaches and couldn't stand anything touching her head. I made her a pocket tiara that she could hold in her hand during the tests. (She has fortunately completely recovered without surgery or chemotherapy.)

BW: Do you sell your work? If so, how?
PIP: I do sell my work, by commission and almost entirely by word of mouth referral. It's not the main focus of my work, selling, but I do enjoy getting commissions and making intentional symbolic objects to order. I would like to do more of that. I can be reached by email at pegnard (at) hawaiiantel.net and I have a paypal address people can send payment to. I have a blog: http://peggyinparadise.blogspot.com and am on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pegnard and https://www.facebook.com/peggyinparadise . I love the community of artists on the net and welcome posts or comments on my blog.

BW: What projects are you currently working on?
PIP: I'm organizing an Improvisational Bead Embroidery Workshop with Robin Atkins on San Juan Island at the end of March. That is going to be so much fun. More info on that on her blog (http://beadlust.blogspot.com/2013/01/stil-have-couple-of-openings.html) or on our event page on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/events/175866232537787/).
I'm making a series of intentional manifestation dolls and planning a large beaded doll for our compost heap outdoors called "Our Lady of Compostella." I love to garden, too, and go to the beach as often as possible.

Stop by Peggy's and tell her Nicole sent you.

LUPUS UPDATE THANK YOU AND ART

Hi Everyone!

OMG!!! Thank you all so very much for the wonderful get well comments, emails and e-cards. This is the first day since last Saturday that I have been out of been and feel like I can sit up for a while.
So the update is..... Saturday I had a gallbladder attack. Let me just say, GIVING BIRTH WAS EASIER!!!! If you ever have heart burn type symptoms that won't go away head to the ER. I waited thinking it would pass.  So without going into to much boring detail. The gallbladder basically holds bile from the liver and when we eat something that bile is released to help with digestion. OK, there are a few other things but that is the gist of it. Now sometime stones form and can float to the opening and cause some real trouble. In my ultrasound I don't have small little stones. Ooohhh nooooo not me..... I have an asteroid floating around just waiting to hit. Heee hee heee. It is huge! So yes I have an apt with the surgeon. No big deal every 5th person has a had their gallbladder removed. While I was in the ER I also had an EKG to make sure I wasn't actually having a heart attack. When my primary care doctor saw me yesterday and compared my EKG from one taken last year he was not happy. So I get to do a stress test too. How much fun is all of this???? eeeekkkk!! :0
NOT AT ALL how I thought I would spend this year. With the lupus my doctor makes sure that every avenue is checked and I like that. I am very week, and when I move I can tell you EXACTLY where my gallbladder is. The human body is remarkable and it is truly amazing how many parts can be removed and we still function. LOL   Ohhhh the really good news, I lost 6 pounds since Saturday. Yeahhhh....

Thank you again for all your kindness, healing energy, and prayers. It allows me to fight even harder.

So as not to leave you with a creepy "sick" post LOL. I want to share some art with you. I do like the connection of haunting faces and the softness of the pastels. Something ethereal created by

KNOWING lupus KNOW IT SUCKS LOL

Hi Everyone!

I am feeling OK this morning. Not so much pain and my hands feel like they are working today. I have had a lot of emails asking me about lupus. ( I never capitalize diseases.) So I thought I would give a bit of info.
First I have been living with lupus for 14 years. Before that, illness and medical problems were never associated with lupus until after the fact. I had a doctor that went over my past with me and at every point told me what was directly related to lupus.
If only I had known. LOL
Second, I work hard to keep healthy and I have made the choice to do it with herbs. I do NOT take any lupus meds. This is my choice and it works for me. Please if you have lupus or any other type of autoimmune talk with your doctor before making any changes to your care.

What is lupus? (other than is sucks? LOL)
Lupus is a chronic inflammatory dis-ease that can affect various systems of the body, especially the skin, joints, blood, kidneys, liver, digestion, lungs, heart, eyes, and brain (CNS)  The body's immune system normally makes proteins called antibodies to protect the body against viruses, bacteria, and other foreign materials.  These foreign materials are called antigens.  In an autoimmune disorder such as lupus, the immune system loses its ability to tell the difference between foreign substances (antigens) and its own cells and tissues.  The immune system then makes antibodies directed against "self."  These antibodies, called "auto-antibodies," react with the "self" antigens to form immune complexes.  The immune complexes build up in the tissues and
can cause inflammation, injury to tissues, and pain.
So in other words your body attacks itself. Sounds like a sci-fi movie doesn't it?

There are three types of lupus. Discoid (cutaneous) which mostly effects the skin.

Systemic lupus is usually more severe than discoid lupus and can affect almost any organ or system of the body.  For some people, only the skin and joints will be involved.  In others, the joints, lungs, kidneys, blood, or other organs and/or tissues may be affected.

The third is drug induced and this is important to know;
Drug-induced lupus occurs after the use of certain prescribed drugs.  Check it out here.

So that is the basics of what lupus is. Of course I have SLE (systemic lupus erythematosus)
Every part of my body is involved and the older I get the worse it seems to be. A part of the time I am up and running. This is "remission" when I am not feeling well this is called a "flare". No two people have the exact same symptoms. So if you suspect that you may have lupus do some research and talk with your doctor. There are specific testing now that can detect if you have lupus. In addition a new medicine, the first in 50 years. Took em long enough right?

lupus for me effects my central nervous system, (CNS) stomach and digestion, bones, muscles, blood, eyes, and lungs. How fun is this??? LOL NOT.... The flare I am in right now is more like a raging fire. Fear not I do have extinguishers!!  I will not allow lupus to win. I will not give into its army that attacks me from the inside out. I will not loose!!!! lupus can be difficult to live with. There are many who bead that live with it and we do OK. Support is important and I thank each one of you for sending wonderful well wishes, healing energy, and prayers.
May health abide in us all

Here are some wonderful sites to check out.

This is me with my mom, last year when I was feeling pretty well.
Mom is 82 here. Doesn't she look great?

WHAT TO DO WITH WOOD CHIPS?

Hi Everyone!

You know that I look for unusual or extraordinary art on line. I had found a painter that creates incredible art and was all ready to post about it, however, I found this guy and had to share right away. His name is Sergey Bobkov's  a Russian artist that uses wood chips as his medium to create animals and birds. His technique will surprise you and his art will astound you.
Remember everything here is wood with the exception of the eyes.

This is Sergey working. I read that he doesn't sell his pieces.

LOVING WINTER????

Hi Everyone!

Lisa at A Bead A Day and Dagi from Kokopelli  have posted about loving winter. Well hee hee hee all of you know how much I DISLIKE winter. I guess because it always feels like winter here on the Oregon coast. It is never warm where I live. In my younger days I lived in snow country always. From Alaska to North Id.  Mike and I did all kinds of winter things including snow camping. I bow hunted and was part of the winter. Now being older and not as strong as I once was I really don't want to have to deal with snow, or cold, or winter.  My heart is in AZ where the sun shines and the sun is warm to hot!  With all of that said. This piece was made for a winter. It was published in Bead Design Studio several years after I created it.
