A BIT OF BEADING HISTORY

Hi Everyone!

When I think of how far the beading world has come in the last 40 years it is truly amazing. In the early 1970s Bell Bottom pants, Empire dresses, clog shoes, and the beaded jewelry was mainly Native American or Hippie macramé with a single bead attached. Of course there was high fashion jewelry but that was far away for big named designers. The only instructional books were old time Native craft books. This book has everything from leather work to tanning hides and beading.

The 1980s took a step up thanks to Deon Delange and her books on Techniques in Beaded Earrings and later More Techniques in Bead Earrings.  We also have Virginia Blakelock to thank for doing the research and writing, "Those Bad Bad Beads", and Loren and Donna Woerpel who wrote Beadworking.

These books brought beading to the forefront in the early days and from there the explosion began. At that time the Japanese seed bead was the worst on the world trade market, being very un-uniform and colors that came off on your hands as you worked. Czech seed beads were the beads of choice followed by French and Italian seed beads. By the early 1990's Miyuki was importing the Delica seed bead to the US,  known then as "D" beads. Bead n Button published it first all bead magazine and people wanted beads. Art schools across the country started teaching more on jewelry design and fashion. Several more beading instructional magazines popped up and before we knew it there were hundreds of instructional books available. Now those numbers are in the thousands. Toho stepped in with a computer to make their beads uniform and soon the Japanese seed bead took first place over the Czech. Bead stores, magazines, books, beads and every type of jewelry and bead art is now the art of the world. As I said in the beginning I am amazed at the industry a small thing like a bead has created.

CHRISTMAS HORSE STORY

Hi Everyone!
It is storming something wicket out. Glad we are in for the weekend. There are things in our lives that touch our hearts. One for me is horses. Since I was a little girl I have always wanted a horse of my own. One of my worst Christmas mornings, I was 11years old and had been asking for a horse all year. We lived in an area where there was room for one and other neighbors had horses. I spent my free time at the neighbors. My grand parents arrived for Christmas bringing lots of gifts including two very large wooden boxes, one for me one for my sister. You know the old slat boxes. Poking out from the slats was "hay" OMG! could it be? I would open this box to find it full of hay that I would carry out to the back to find my horse? Even more exciting my sister has one too so we could ride together?  I was so excited! I kept checking the back field to see if they brought my house in yet. Christmas morning. My brothers and sister were opening gifts and it was a frenzy of laughter, oooohhhhhs and aaaaahhhhhs. Then it was time. My Nan called my sister and I over to the big boxes. We tore into them I grabbed up the hay and and.... what was this? My sister cried out in happy joy to find a life sized doll. She danced around the living room holding her doll and was as happy as can be. I stood there with a hay covered life size doll as my heart fell to my toes. A doll? I never played with dolls ever! My mom asked what was wrong. I asked where my horse was? I began to cry. Of course the "hay" was Celsius a packing material of the time. I remember everyone trying to console me. My baby brother brought out some of his pajamas so this huge doll with the moving eyes could wear them. This is a true story. I did end up giving my doll to my sister. I was quite the tom-boy. I never did get a horse of my own but my soul is still connected to them.

Have a very nice Sunday

These two must be from Florence LOL

FEATHERS AND LEATHER

Hi Everyone!

The sun is trying to come out and show some blue skies. Yeahhhh finally a break from the darkness.
Most of you know that my background stems from Native American. Most of my life I have worked with animal and natural items to create art with. Working with these types of materials is ALWAYS to honor the animal or the part of nature. There is a real honesty to art when you use feathers and hides and leather. With that I have just listed some leather and wild Turkey feathers in my Beadwright Etsy store. The leather is deer, cow, and lamb with some really nice embossing.
Creating art with all types of materials.

Wild Turkey wing feathers

Wild Turkey tail feathers.

Embossed Lamb. This is a very cool piece of leather.

Perfect leather for traditional crafts and backing for bead and Soutache finishing

DO YOU SOUTACHE?

Hi Everyone!

Most of you know that I have been in the beading world for close to 50 years. I sold my first piece of bead work when I was 14 on the streets in San Francisco, CA. and from there it has been one adventure after another. I have taught more people how to bead than carter has liver pills. LOL ( very old saying.) A very large portion of them started businesses. I have been published over 400 times, have developed products and techniques for out industry and am a part of a world that just keeps expanding. It is amazing to see how traditional beading techniques from all over the world have evolved and are embraced to form new and wonderful beading concepts. Soutache isn't new by any means, however the jewelry being produced using this technique is; vibrant in color and exotic in shape. The creative mind can use this form of art to achieve not just jewelry but fine art as well. I am again excited to still be around to see the great changes in the beading world.

NOT A BREATH OF WIND

Hi Everyone!
OK so how strange is this? After the 72mph winds we had yesterday I wake up this morning to not a breath of wind. It is an eerie feeling. We ALWAYS have wind here. Stark weathered trees standing still against the shades of grey sky. Seagulls and ravens flying in tandem, shadowed black. It truly feels like the calm before a storm. Let us hope not.
Geeee on a lighter note. LOL I have been so busy listing new items in my Beadwright Etsy Store. I mean seriously there are over 350 beads, beading supplies, Nicole's BeadBacking, Cabochons, Nymo thread, Swarovski Rivolis, Ultrasuede, leather and much much more. Ohhh and because the grab bag sold so quickly I have made up a second bag. Hurry it won't last long. I also have some textured Nicole's BeadBacking listed. The color is Hawk Wing with a painted texture that you can bead right on top of adding more color and texture to your beading and art projects. I am excited about this and will have more colors this week.
Here are just a few of the items in our Beadwright Etsy Store

Hi Everyone!
I am not going to be on the computer very long. We are in the middle of a very high wind storm. Oh and let us not forget the rain that comes with it. The Pacific is roaring and rumbling, it is loud.
The wind and the water meet in angry gestures both fighting for the right to be heard.
The lights are flickering so I will wish all of you a happy day. Stay safe and warm.

MONDAY THE WALKING DEAD AND MORE

Hi Everyone!

OK so did you love the mid season finale of The Walking Dead? I hate that we won't see the rest of the season until February. UUURRRGGGGG........ I do like that the Governor is truly showing his true colors. Andrea..... has turned into such a sap.  Give me Daryl (Norman Reedus) any day of the week. If I was only 20 years younger. LOL

Let's see if Merle stands up with his brother next year.

News year eve and day the entire episodes 1, 2 and the first part of 3 will be showing.

Today I am extremely busy and most Mondays are for me. I have a wolf to bead for a special order and need to get with that ASAP. I got the pattern from my good friend Lori (Cook) Culligan. Check out her website and all of her patterns.
