A Delightful Artist

For some time I have been visiting Ruthi from Roseworks. She is simply a delightful person and a wonderful artists. I thought you should get to know her as well.
A short bio;
My name is Ruthie and I've been doing crafty things as long as I can remember. My Mom is a crocheter and has worked in a number of other mediums. She taught me young to have an appreciation for creating beauty. I fell in love with jewelry creation about 10 years ago, but I only began to get serious about it a few years ago. I've been selling my work for just over a year now and I love it! I battle severe health problems and this gives me something to do to fill my days that lets me feel like I'm still a productive member of society. Plus, like I said, I just love it!
What inspires you to create;
I'm inspired and challenged by many different things. Looking at different forms of art often gives me ideas, sometimes I'll be inspired by something simple like a color or a design on a pair of sandals. I also love participating in challenges like the ones over at Thursday Sweet Treats (http://thursdaysweettreat.blogspot.com/) because it forces me to push myself as an artist.
What items to you like best to create with Types of materials;
I'm a very ADD artist - so I work with a lot of different materials! My favorites would have to be my seed beads though. I love the many different things you can do with bead weaving! There are so many colors, stitches, and possibilities out there!

What are your expectations for the near future for you personally and artistically;
I have a lot of projects in the works that are challenging me to grow as an artist - so I'd say simple I'm expecting growth.

Here are a few photos. Of course I love this one anything with Orange it!

Florence Old Town Market

Finally we have sun in Florence! So this weekend I opened a space at the Florence Old Town Market. What a fun place to be a vendor. The energy is high with the eclectic group of vendors and buyers that come through. I set up next to my good friend and Toho Bead Competition winner, Charmaine Pesnell. The Local Saturday news paper printed Charmaine's interview on the front page. This brought a lot of ramblings and jokes about her celebrity. Charmaine is very humble but I think she enjoyed the attention. So the day was good. I sold lots!!!!! and got some good sunshine. However, by the time I got home my face felt a bit stiff. OMG!!! I am so sunburned that I can not do the Market today. In fact I am so sunburned that I won't be able to go out side for a few days. I wanted sun? I got it!
No you don't get a photo of my burnt face. LOL!

Here is Charmaine at her booth

My umbrella rolls down quickly when the winds come howling through.

If you ever come to visit Florence, OR. Be sure to stop by the Old Town Market every weekend!
Have a great Sunday everyone!!!

SAD DAY IN FLORENCE

Hi everyone
As you know I am very involved in the art community of my town of Florence, OR. A few weeks ago my bead group Florence Area Beaders "FAB" were invited to display our work at the Florence Library. There is a wonderful arts department and artists from around the area can sign up to display. In an earlier post I showed off some of the FAB group and the case. Today we all received a phone call telling us that the case had been broken into and 4 pieces were stolen. It is a sad day when even the library locked case isn't safe. Who ever did this better watch out! We have the whole community on alert. The middle shelf and the green necklace on the bottom shelf are the items that were stolen. Nothing quite as low as a thief.

Egyptian Spice

I have been so busy beading for art galleries and exhibits that I don't get to bead just for me very much. So a few weeks ago I sat down at my work table and created Egyptian Spice just for me. LOL! The first time I wore it out a lady purchased it off my neck. I love when that happens! At least I have a photo of it.

Fishing in Montana

Last September my grandma passed over at the age of 103 years. She was in perfect mind and spirit at that age. Her body just wore out. For 16 years my mom and grandma lived together caring for each other. My mom is finally getting out and doing things that she loves to do. At the age of 80 my mom has the same spirit and love of life that my grandma did. Recently she took a trip to Flathead Lake, MT to see my brother. Pat, who lives and runs a fishing guide business there, of course took mom and the rest of the family out fishing. Something mom loves to do. Hey there is the best fishing in MT!!! The photo isn't too good but here is just one of the fish mom caught.

My mom Sally, brother Pat, and dinner!

If you want to go fishing in Montana be sure to call my brother Pat

More Fun Beads

If you read my posts you know that a few days ago I received an order from ArtBeads.com. All of you know how fun it is to receive that package in the mail with beads in it. Even though you know what is there, the excitement of actually seeing and touching the beads is like a kid in a candy store. LOL! Now the item that excited me most is this very beautiful Sterling Silver Spider pendant. Will I create jewelry with this pendant? Oooohhhh Noooooo. As soon as I saw this on the ArtBeads.com web site I knew I had to have her and exactly what I was going to use her for. This and several other pendants are limited editions so be sure to visit and get yours soon. By the way the Spider sits on Red Agate. How cool is that?

Computer Trouble

Well, we all have it from time to time. You know computer trouble. Most of the things Mike or I can fix ourselves. However, this morning it was a freeze up on the web. Nothing worked. So after doing what I could think of to do I called my provider. (Dare I say their name? LOL) I spent an hour in India trying to understand what was being said to me and trying to get across to the tech help ( I use those word loosely) what was wrong. OMG!!!! Can't we speak to Americans any more? A few more phone calls with no help at all and I was ready to scream. I was teaching a class today so had to leave the mess to Mike. He found a number for our provider that is actually in the USA so we had an appointment for someone to come out and change our modem. However, by the time I returned home Mike had the computer fixed. The problem was NONE of the things that were being said to me by the techs. I am so thankful that I was gone for the day and Mike had time to figure it all out. The problem? Malware from my home page. Beware everyone.

Meeting New People

I love finding out where people have come from in the beading world. Not just where they live but the journey the have taken in beading. I met a wonderful artists by the name of Barbara Green. She intrigued me when she ordered some of my BeadBacking. She said she likes to try new beading products. I instantly typed in her web site to find a beautiful web site along with some awesome beadwork. Please visit her site at http://www.greentopjewelry.com/index.html. So I asked Barbara to take part in my interviews. Here is what she has to share.

I am Barbara Green, age 60. I am very happily married to the most wonderful man in the world. It is a 2nd marriage for both of us and we will celebrate our 25th anniversary in February. Between us we have 4 grownup kids – 3 boys, 1 girl – and between them we have 5 grandchildren – 4 boys, 1 girl.

I was born in Jonesboro, AR, but grew up in the Rockford, IL area. I always thought that I would grow up to be an author, but life had other ideas. I was married young (19) and started my family at age 20. It didn’t leave much time for art, but I always managed to work in a thing or two. I have always sewn and that was my artistic outlet for a long time, then as the kids got older and I had more time, I found myself trying more things. I
was also heavily involved in computer graphic design through work.

I found myself between jobs with some time on my hands in 1994, so I went to San Diego with my husband who was teaching week-long seminar. We were staying near the beach, where I found a bead shop with a view of the beach. I decided to sign up for a class to kill some time. It was an eye-opener. I was hooked.

That class taught me how to bead around a cabochon, bead embroidery and how to string beads. The beginning basics were enough to get me started and when I went home I kept working on it. Finding beads where we lived at the time was not easy then, but I persevered. About 5 years later, after I had given away as much as my family would take, my husband suggested that I try doing a show and selling my work. I was amazed – people liked my work and bought it.

In the meantime, I had discovered a great group of people on an AOL message board (which no longer exists) and through them I was introduced to so many other websites, bead stitches and some wonderful pattern designers.

I love to try new stitches and I am really hooked on spirals of all types, but when I get in a slump and am not sure what to do, I go back to my cabochons and do bead embroidery. It really helps that my husband has gotten involved in cabbing and he makes some incredible cabs out of beautiful stones.

As for new products, I have a love/hate relationship with Fireline. Friends at my gem club got me to try it. I love the strength of it, but I hate the tangles I get. I find myself sneaking back to Nymo.

I had tried Lacey’s stiff stuff and while I liked the way it held up, I wasn’t happy with the white and having to color it sometimes to make it not show through. I’m looking forward to using the colored material that Nichole sent me. I think it will be just right for what I do.

I would really love to go to one of the big bead shows up North and meet some of the wonderful folk who have inspired me and take a class from them. I find that even though I teach, I can always learn something new from others.

I am getting back into teaching this year. I had to stop because of some health problems. I find I love sharing my love of beading with others.

Barbara's beaded work can be found in several art galleries in her area and she holds classes as well.

Well the excitement has NOT subsided here in Florence, OR. with Charmaine Pesnell's grand win of the Toho Bead Challenge. This is not a great photo, it was taken from a scan. However, you get the idea of the talent and the hours of work Charmaine put into this incredible beaded art piece.
